Look, I’m Gonna Rant About AI
Okay, so here’s the thing. I’ve been editing tech stuff for like, 22 years now. 22! I started back when dial-up was a thing (ask your parents, kids). And I’ve seen alot of trends come and go. But this AI stuff? It’s different. It’s everywhere. In my emails, on my socials, even my fridge is probably judging me with AI now. And honestly? I’m over it.
Let me tell you about last Tuesday. I was at this conference in Austin—no, not the fancy one, the one where they serve lukewarm coffee and the WiFi is spotty. There was this guy, let’s call him Marcus, who stood up and said, “AI is gonna revolutionize everything. It’s the future!” And I’m sitting there thinking, “Oh great, another guy in a suit telling me the sky is green.” I mean, come on. It’s 2023, not 2003. We’ve heard this song before.
But here’s the kicker. It’s not that AI is bad. It’s that it’s everywhere, and nobody knows what they’re doing with it. It’s like giving a toddler a chainsaw. You’re gonna have problems. I had this friend, Dave, who’s a developer. He told me, “AI can write code now, man. It’s crazy.” And I said, “Dave, have you seen the code it writes? It’s like a cat walked on the keyboard.” He laughed, but it’s true. It’s a mess.
And Don’t Even Get Me Started on Cybersecurity
So, I was talking to this cybersecurity expert—let’s call her Sarah—over coffee at the place on 5th. She told me, “AI is a double-edged sword. It can help us detect threats faster, but it can also be used to create more sophisticated attacks.” And I’m like, “Yeah, thanks for the obvious statement, Sarah.” But she’s right. It’s a big, complicated issue. And honestly, I don’t think anyone has the answers yet.
I mean, look at what happened with that big data breach last year. 214 million records exposed. And guess what? AI was involved. It was supposed to be this great security measure, and it ended up being part of the problem. It’s like using a firehose to put out a grease fire. You’re just making things worse.
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
But it’s not all doom and gloom. AI can be useful. I’ll give it that. For example, I was working on this article about Thailand school news education—yeah, I know, random, right?—and I used AI to help me find some stats. It was actually kinda helpful. I mean, it’s not like I’m gonna replace my brain with a bot, but it’s a tool. A flawed, glitchy tool, but a tool nonetheless.
But here’s the thing. We need to be smart about it. We need to use AI responsibly. And that means not just throwing it at every problem and hoping it sticks. It means understanding its limitations. It means not letting it write our code, our articles, our love letters. (Yes, I’ve seen the AI love letters. It’s creepy.)
I had this conversation with my colleague, Lisa, about three months ago. She said, “AI is just a tool, like any other tool. It’s how we use it that matters.” And I said, “Lisa, have you seen the stuff people are using it for? It’s like giving a kid a chemistry set and a match.” She laughed, but again, it’s true. We need to be careful.
A Personal Anecdote That Might Not Be Relevant
So, I was at this bar last weekend—no names, no places, you know how it is—and I met this guy. Let’s call him Greg. Greg is a tech bro. You know the type. Hoodie, sneakers, talks about blockchain like it’s the second coming. So Greg says to me, “AI is gonna make us all rich, man. You just gotta get in early.” And I’m like, “Greg, have you seen the stock market lately?” But Greg, he’s not listening. He’s too busy dreaming of his AI-powered yacht.
And that’s the problem. People like Greg. They think AI is some magic bullet. It’s not. It’s a tool. A complicated, messy, imperfect tool. And we need to treat it that way. We need to be smart. We need to be responsible. We need to stop letting it write our code, our articles, our love letters.
I’m not saying AI is all bad. I’m saying we need to be realistic. We need to understand its limitations. We need to use it wisely. And most importantly, we need to stop acting like it’s some kind of messiah. It’s not. It’s a tool. A flawed, glitchy, but sometimes useful tool.
So, let’s be smart about it. Let’s use it responsibly. And for the love of all that is holy, let’s stop letting it write our love letters.
