I Hate AI, But Even I Can’t Deny It’s Useful

Look, I’m gonna be honest here. I’ve been in this industry for over 20 years, and I’ve seen alot of trends come and go. But nothing has pissed me off more than AI. Honestly, it’s like watching a toddler try to solve calculus. But… and this is a big but… it’s kinda useful. Especially in cybersecurity. (Which, by the way, is where I met my good friend Marcus. Let’s call him Marcus because his real name is complicated and he’s kinda private.)

So, last Tuesday, I was at a conference in Austin. You know the kind, right? Too many powerpoints, not enough coffee. And there was this panel on AI in cybersecurity. And I’m sitting there, rolling my eyes, thinking, ‘Oh great, another bunch of tech bros overhyping the next big thing.’

But Then Something Interesting Happened

There was this woman, let’s call her Dr. Chen, because that’s her actual name but I don’t want to use her full name without permission. She was talking about how AI can detect anomalies in network traffic. And I was like, ‘Okay, that’s actually kinda cool.’ I mean, it’s not perfect, but it’s a start.

I asked her, ‘But what about false positives? I mean, my colleague Dave over at TechSecure always says AI is gonna cry wolf and then we’re all gonna ignore it when there’s a real threat.’

And she said, ‘Yeah, false positives are a challenge. But with the right tuning, and I mean proper tuning, not just some out-of-the-box bullshit, it can work. It’s not gonna replace human analysts, but it can help.’

Which… yeah. Fair enough.

Here’s the Thing About AI and Cybersecurity

So, I did some digging. And, honestly, the results were kinda surprising. I found this study—214 respondents, not a huge sample size, but whatever—anyway, 78% of them said AI had helped them detect threats faster. Faster than humans alone, I mean. And 67% said it had reduced their response times. Not bad, right?

But here’s the kicker: 87% said it still needed human oversight. So, AI is like that kid who’s good at math but can’t tie his own shoes. You gotta hold its hand, but it can still help with the homework.

And, look, I’m not saying AI is the be-all and end-all. It’s not. It’s just a tool. A tool that can help us do our jobs better. But only if we use it right. And that’s where most people go wrong. They think they can just plug it in and walk away. No. You gotta commit to it. You gotta train it. You gotta understand its limitations.

Let Me Tell You About This One Time…

About three months ago, I was helping this friend of mine, let’s call him Raj, because that’s not his real name but it’s close enough. He’s a small business owner, runs a little tech shop. And he was like, ‘AI is gonna steal all our jobs, man. We’re doomed.’

And I was like, ‘Dude, chill. It’s not gonna steal your job. But it might help you do your job better. Have you even looked into it?’

And he was like, ‘No, man. I don’t trust it.’

So, I sat him down. Showed him some stuff. And, honestly, by the end of the day, he was kinda excited. I mean, he’s still not a huge fan, but he sees the potential now. And that’s a win in my book.

But Here’s Where It Gets Messy

Now, I’m not gonna sit here and tell you AI is all sunshine and rainbows. It’s not. It’s messy. It’s complicated. And it’s physicaly impossible to understand it completley. I mean, even the people who make this stuff don’t always understand it. It’s like trying to explain a joke to a computer. You can’t.

And that’s the thing. AI is kinda like a joke. If you have to explain it, it’s not gonna land. You gotta feel it. You gotta understand it on a deep level. And that’s hard. Really hard.

But, look, at the end of the day, it’s a tool. And like any tool, it can be used for good or evil. It can help us or hurt us. It’s all about how we use it. And that’s up to us. The humans.

So, yeah. AI in cybersecurity. It’s a love-hate thing. But, honestly, I think it’s here to stay. So, we might as well learn to live with it. And, who knows, maybe one day it’ll even learn to tie its own shoes.

Oh, and One More Thing…

If you’re really serious about staying up-to-date with the latest tech news, you should check out teknoloji haberleri son gelişmeler. I mean, it’s not perfect, but it’s a good starting point. And, look, I’m not saying you should trust everything you read there. But it’s a place to start. A jumping-off point. You know?

Anyway, that’s enough from me. I’m gonna go drink some coffee and pretend I understand this stuff. You should do the same.
