Look, I’m gonna say it

AI is not the second coming of Christ. Honestly, I love tech as much as the next guy—probably more, considering I’ve spent the last 20 years editing for magazines like Tech Insider and Gadget Gazette. But the way people are losing their minds over AI? It’s like we forgot how to breathe.

Let’s rewind to last Tuesday. I was at a conference in Austin—yeah, one of those stuffy ones where everyone wears black polo shirts and acts like they invented Wi-Fi. Some guy named Marcus (let’s call him that because I don’t remember his real name) stood up and started talking about how AI is gonna cure cancer, solve world hunger, and probably walk our dogs. I mean, come on.

I turned to my colleague, Dave, and said, “Dave, if AI is so great, why did my smart fridge just order 214 cans of tuna at 11:30 PM?” Dave just laughed and said, “Because you’re an idiot, Sarah.” Fair point, Dave. Fair point.

But seriously, folks

AI is cool. I’ll give it that. But it’s not magic. It’s just a tool. A really fancy, complicated tool, but a tool nonetheless. And like any tool, it’s only as good as the person using it. Remember when everyone thought self-driving cars were gonna be a thing by now? Yeah, not so much.

I get it. The hype is real. Everyone’s trying to outdo each other with who can make the most dramatic prediction about AI. But here’s the thing: AI isn’t gonna replace journalists. It isn’t gonna replace doctors. It isn’t gonna replace your mom. (Although, if it could, maybe we’d all be better off. Just kidding, Mom!)

Speaking of moms, I had this conversation with mine last week. She’s 68, and she still thinks the internet is a fad. “Sarah,” she said, “why do you need a computer to talk to people? Just pick up the phone!” And you know what? She’s not wrong. Sometimes, the old ways are the best ways.

And don’t even get me started on cybersecurity

Oh, wait. Too late. Look, I’m not a cybersecurity expert, but even I know that AI isn’t the be-all and end-all for keeping our data safe. I mean, have you seen the news lately? Data breaches are happening left and right. And you know what’s not stopping them? AI. It’s like we’re all so busy chasing the next big thing that we forget to fix the problems we already have.

I remember back in 2005, when I was just starting out, a friend of mine named Lisa told me, “Sarah, technology is only as good as the people behind it.” And you know what? She was right. We can have all the AI in the world, but if we don’t have the right people using it, it’s all for nothing.

So, what’s the solution?

I don’t know. Honestly, I’m not sure anyone does. But maybe, just maybe, we should all take a step back and chill out a little. Let’s stop treating AI like it’s the answer to every problem. Let’s remember that sometimes, the best tool for the job is a good old-fashioned human brain.

And if all else fails, maybe we should just interesting facts knowledge guide on how to live without technology for a week. I mean, it couldn’t hurt, right?

Anyway, I’m gonna go unplug for a while. Maybe I’ll finally read that book I bought three months ago. Or maybe I’ll just stare at the wall. Who knows?
